Midas donates books to the value of R120 000
ACE Midas Soweto donated books to the value of R60 000 to each Mveledzandivho Primary School and Protea South Primary School, local schools within the area. According to the Department of Education, a staggering 86% of public schools in South Africa lack proper library facilities. Over 78% of children fail to read with comprehension at grade 4 level, this is according to a recent Progress in International Reading Literacy Study report.
Midas acknowledges the tremendous need for libraries in schools and communities across South Africa. Shannon Drake, Midas National Franchise Manager says “As responsible citizens, we all have a duty towards the upliftment of disadvantaged communities. It’s imperative to not only recognise the potential of every South African, but also their right to have opportunities in order to optimise their potential.”
Midas has partnered with Qualibooks, a registered service provider to the Department of Education (National; Provincial; schools direct) as well as the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture to ensure that that every child at the school will have access to fun reading resources, this is a critical cornerstone of a well-rounded education.
In attendance at the handover, to recognise the value reading and education plays in the community, was Jabulile Sibiya from the Gauteng Department of Education, who concluded, “Creating readers, to produce leaders, by providing books”.
