Serco has announced that in co-operation with its telematics partner, Ikhaya Automation, it has fitted camera systems to 17 ABI trucks and trailers to assist drivers during reversing.
The company's MD Clinton Holcroft said the use of camera’s as reverse aids was becoming prominent in Europe, where trucks were are often fitted with cameras at the rear of the vehicle linked to an in-cab LCD screen providing improved visibility while reversing. "The camera system and its development were in line with Serco's drive to offer transporters leading edge technology.”
He adds that the reverse aid improves safety for the public and reduces damage during docking while also saving time by making maneuvering easier. The system has HD quality video, can accommodate up to four cameras, has night vision, and the rear mounted camera comes with a protective cover to prevent damage.
The cameras, suitable for rigid vehicles as well as horse and trailer combinations, also help deter theft. The optional video recording system assists in assessing accountability for losses and/or damages. Holcroft explains that the relatively low entry cost means improved safety and reduced damage is made an attractive solution.
