Axalta’s premium refinish brand Cromax, alignment with the AMZ Racing team
Axalta, with its premium refinish brand Cromax, continues its support the AMZ Racing team, for the fourth year - involving 60 students from the ETH Zürich (Polytechnics Zürich) and the Hochschule Luzern (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences & Arts).
After a year of pandemic related interruption, AMZ has developed a brand-new racing car – its 15th - for the next Formula Student competitions - bernina named after a Swiss mountain, Piz Bernina. Formula Student is an internationally recognised motorsports competition specifically developed for students from universities around the world. In 2010, AMZ, the first Swiss team in Formula Student, moved to the eRacing series, which focuses on electric-powered racing cars.
In 2022, Formula Student brings a new challenge to the students, as the same car will have to compete in both the electric and driverless categories, requiring high flexibility to equip the same vehicle for races with drivers and autonomously.
Finishing of the AMZ electric racing car bernina - As in the past 4 years, the carbon chassis got its colours at the Axalta Training Center in Pratteln, in May 2022. The ETH students supported by the Axalta Training Specialist, Ralf Maag, prepared the new design of the vehicle by precisely positioning the numerous strips. In order to keep a certain continuity, a clear wish from the ETH students was to carry on with the same colours for bernina as for its predecessors. Consequently, the chassis has been painted in StarLite, Axalta's Automotive Colour of the Year 2018 - a white pearlescent paint - and a special red pearlescent effect colour.
For the best colour accuracy, the team used the Daisy Wheel, an automated dosing and mixing machine by Fillon Technologies, which is the most efficient mixing process in the global refinish market. To finish off, bernina was given its exceptional gloss with Cromax CC6750 Ultra Performance Energy clearcoat. A particular advantage of this clearcoat is its fast curing at low temperatures - which is not only energy-saving, but the low temperature also protects the carbon chassis and sensitive electronic parts.
Philippe Dominique, Team Leader CTO of AMZ Racing, says: "The Cromax team took great care to ensure that the final design would perfectly match with the initial livery and that the paintwork has a minimum impact on the overall weight which is essential to keep the car performance!”
Céline Tambour, Marketing Communication Specialist at Axalta Refinish Switzerland, says: “Supporting the AMZ Racing team is part of a worldwide effort by Axalta, a technology-based organisation, to promote the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Also, seeing the fascination of the AMZ students for coatings after the transformation of the painted chassis is a real reward for the accomplished work.”
bernina was officially unveiled in Hinwil at Sauber Motorsport AG and is scheduled to compete in various European Formula Student races in the season. Yann Bernard, CEO of AMZ Racing and student of engineering, says: “With a lot of dedication, our passion and hard work, we are sure that bernina will belong to the strongest contenders in the events of the coming summer.”
