Festival of Motoring 2022
By Jayden Steedman
This year saw the Festival of Motoring back in action after 2 long years.
Kyalami Grand Prix circuit was host to the event and accommodated nearly 29 000 people over the weekend who came to see all the motoring festivities scattered around the circuit. With Formula One on the horizon, it was no surprise to see a couple Formula cars in the paddock and on track. If you attended the event, you surely heard the screaming roar of the Naturally Aspirated V8’s, tingling your senses and overwhelming your auditory canal.
There were tons to see, everything from 4-cylinder hatchbacks to fully electric EQ vehicles. Mercedes-Benz South Africa had a full display of their new electric models including the mighty impressive EQB, clearly distinguishable by its black panel radiator grille. The world we know is changing and we should see a lot more of these electric models on the roads. Audi South Africa also joined the electric atmosphere and had their E-Tron S Sportback on display which looked incredibly sporty for a 4-door SUV.
Moving away from four wheels, the local grand prix circuit also saw various superbikes featuring the Kawasaki ZX10R. The Sunbet ZX10 Masters Cup held an official race at #FOM2022 which saw riders compete for vital championship points.
Different zones which were color coordinated were dispersed across the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit. These zones were host to various different categories of events. The Green Zone, Yellow Zone, Red Zone, and finally the Blue Zone. These zones all had exciting automotive orientated displays on the go and there was never a dull moment.
If you bought a ticket purely for the thrill of speed, you most likely left the event satisfied. Ticket holders had the opportunity to hop into a performance vehicle and go for a fun-filled hot lap around the circuit accompanied by an experienced driver.
In my opinion, this year’s Festival of Motoring was a success and I thoroughly enjoyed the event, I will surely be attending the event next year.
