Ford Ranger - SA's No.1 Double-Cab Bakkie again in H1 2026
South Africa’s iconic Ford Ranger has continued to reinforce its position as SA’s most popular double-cab bakkie, delivering category leadership in this segment across the first six months of 2026. This now marks over three years of segment leadership for the locally built Ranger. According to the latest sales data from Lightstone Auto and additional registration data published by Cars.co.za, 10 075 Ranger double-cab units were registered and delivered to Ford owners between January and June this year. The result continues the Silverton-built Ranger’s strong sales momentum after it secured South Africa’s double-cab sales crown for a third consecutive year in 2025.
“The Ranger's continued leadership in the double-cab segment is a clear endorsement of what South African customers are asking for: a vehicle that delivers genuine bakkie capability alongside the comfort and technology they expect from a modern passenger vehicle. “South Africans' love for the double cab bakkie runs far deeper than practicality alone. Bakkies are rooted in a national identity that blends work and lifestyle into one single offering. This dual-purpose demand means owners expect a vehicle to possess the structural integrity to handle demanding work, while offering the refinement expected of a modern passenger vehicle,” he says. Double-cab derivatives accounted for approximately 80,4% of the 12 522 overall Ford Ranger registrations recorded during the first half of 2026.
The Ford Ranger is manufactured at Ford's Silverton Manufacturing Plant in Pretoria, one of the company's key global production facilities, and its double-cab leadership reflects directly on the plant's workforce, local suppliers and dealer network. "This result belongs to our employees, our suppliers, our dealers, and the customers who keep choosing the Ford Ranger," Searle says. "It's proof that a locally built product can lead a highly competitive, closely watched segment year after year."
The Silverton Assembly Plant was recently named the number one quality plant in the global Ford manufacturing ecosystem. “This reflects true South African excellence, and it’s a key part of why our people and our customers are both choosing Ranger first,” says Searle.
“A beautiful bakkie that doesn't work is frustrating. A functional bakkie with no soul is forgettable.
