MISA appeals to motorists to avoid driving at night
MISA, the Motor Industry Staff Association, has noted that in the last two fatal accidents reported, both have occurred late at night when visibility is limited. Martlé Keyter, MISA’s Chief Executive Officer: Operations, says according to research by insurance companies night-time accidents are 9 times more severe than at daytime.
Keyter echoes the appeal of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) asking motorist to avoid travelling at night, especially in rainy conditions. The devastating head-on collision on the R63 between Adelaide and Maqoma (Fort Beaufort) in the Eastern Cape that claimed 15 lives, happened at midnight. Five other passengers sustained injuries in the head-on collision involving a fully loaded minibus taxi and a bakkie.
This comes days after the bodies of three police officers and the Volkswagen Polo they travelled in, where retrieved from the Hennopsriver in Centurion. Off duty Constables Linda Cebekhulu (24), Keamogetswe Buys (30) and Boipelo Senoge (20) were last seen traveling late night, near the Grasmere Toll Plaza on the N1, on route to Limpopo.
Authorities believe their car crashed, rolled and veered off the N1 at night during a storm.
In January this year 17 people died in a horrific accident involving a truck and minibus at Van Reenen’s Pass on the N3 at night. Only a baby-girl survived. According to Arrive Alive night time driving presents obstacles and risks that you do not have to deal with during the day, such as shorter days and compromised night vision.
