MISA comment - Minister must assist students of deregistered institutions
MISA, the Motor Industry Staff Association, is shocked and disappointed that four institutions have been deregistered by the Department of Higher Education to the detriment of thousands of students. The Department announced in the Government Gazette that the registration of the private higher education institutions of Educor, Damelin, CityVarsity, Icesa City Campus and Lyceum College, have been cancelled after failure to submit audited financial statements for the 2021 and 2022 annual reports.
Martlé Keyter, MISA’s Chief Executive Officer: Operations, call on Dr Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education, to give clarity on the fate of students who have obtained qualifications from these institutions and are currently still busy with their studies.
“It is disturbing to learn from the Minister’s statement that students got marks although exam scrips were not marked because lecturers were not paid. MISA believes that the Department should have taken steps to prevent the devastating impact on students after it received the first complaints of poor quality of learning and teaching, poor quality staff and non-payment of salaries. Damelin for example, was founded in 1943 and has nine campuses in South Africa. Daily Maverick reported in April 2021 about the flood of student complaints, but yet nothing was done by the Department to warn students.
“MISA assists members and their children with bursaries to help them to study at public and private higher education institutions. This is a devastating blow to members and their children who recently obtained qualifications or are currently studying at these institutions,” says Keyter.
MISA member Samuel Chauke (62), was a proud father, after his last born, Sam Chauke (22) completed his Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and Business Management at Damelin’s Menlyn campus in Pretoria. MISA assisted Chauke jnr from his second year with an annual bursary. It was unbelievable for Chauke when he was approved, as this meant that it will lighten his financial burden. Tertiary fees are expensive and he believes that without MISA, he would not have done it.
According to Keyter, MISA has another two members whose bursaries at Damelin have been approved and paid to the higher institution. Their fate is now also in limbo.
