MISA ready to assist members with MIBCO’s new Health Insurance for Sector 5
MISA, the Motor Industry Staff Association, is ready to assist its members with questions on the new compulsory medical health insurance scheme for all Sector 5 employees that MIBCO, the Motor Industry Bargaining Council, will implement on 1 February 2026.
The new insurance scheme, Administered by Affinity Health, is part of the MIBCO Wage Agreement signed last year. The aim is to make private healthcare affordable for Sector 5, the most vulnerable employees in the industry.
“It is important for Sector 5 employees to know that it is compulsory unless they Opt Out within the first 60-days. Sector 5 employees are allowed to Opt Out if they can’t afford the health insurance or are already covered, only if they have not used any of the services,” says Martle Keyter.
The total monthly cost of the plan is R259, of which employers will contribute R85 in Year 1, while employees will contribute R174.
MISA’s priority is to ensure that our members clearly understand:
• What the scheme covers;
• How the contributions will work; and
• How to exercise the 60 day opt out option, should they choose to do so.
The Union urges all members to familiarise themselves with the benefits, which include GP consultations, acute and chronic medication, basic dentistry, optometry, emergency medical services and accident hospital cover up to R100 000.
MISA will continue to monitor implementation to ensure fairness, transparency and compliance with the collective agreement. Members who need clarity or want to discuss their options are encouraged to contact MISA directly, says Keyter.
