MISA urges members to heed severe weather warnings 

 

MISA, the Motor Industry Staff Association, is urging its more than 79 000 members, as well as all South Africans, to exercise extreme caution following a weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). A developing Cut-Off Low (COL) pressure system is expected to affect large parts of the country from Wednesday, 3 June, into Thursday, 4 June 2026.

 

According to SAWS, the weather system is expected to bring widespread cold, wet and windy conditions to the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and adjacent interior regions, with heavy rainfall. This may potentially result in flooding of roads, bridges, low-lying settlements and river crossings.

 

Martlé Keyter, MISA's Chief Executive Officer: Operations, says the safety of workers and their families must remain the highest priority during the severe weather event.

"Many of our members travel long distances to and from work every day, often during adverse weather conditions. We urge everyone to place their safety first and not take unnecessary risks by attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges or rivers," says Keyter.

 

She warns motorists to expect dangerous driving conditions due to reduced visibility, waterlogged roads and strong winds. "South Africans have witnessed far too many tragic incidents where people underestimated the power of floodwaters. Vehicles can be swept away in seconds. If you encounter a flooded road, turn around and find an alternative route. It is always better to arrive late than not arrive at all," she says.

 

MISA also encouraged employers in the retail motor industry to remain flexible and understanding where severe weather conditions may impact employees' ability to travel safely. MISA will continue to monitor developments and urges all affected communities to remain vigilant as the weather system unfolds.
