MIWA celebrates a year of growth, innovation and strong industry impact
The Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) is closing out 2025 on a high note, marking one of its most active and impactful years to date. With major advances in youth development, skills upliftment, industry collaboration, transformation, and brand-building, MIWA has continued to demonstrate strong leadership within South Africa’s automotive aftermarket.
Reflecting on the year, MIWA National Director Pieter Niemand says 2025 has been characterised by momentum, member engagement, and bold initiatives designed to strengthen the sector. “From expanding Motor Mech competitions and launching Project Dineo, to growing technical platforms like SpannerTorque and rolling out critical short skills programmes, this has been a year where MIWA has actively invested in the future of our industry,” he says.
Driving youth development and skills for the future - MIWA’s long-standing commitment to developing the next generation of artisans reached new heights this year with five highly successful Motor Mech competitions across the country. These events continue to serve as a launchpad for young talent, bringing together learners, educators, industry mentors and employers to showcase real career pathways.
The 2025 season also marked the national launch of Project Dineo at Port Rex Technical High School – a groundbreaking RMI-led initiative in partnership with merSETA, Harambee, and the Presidency. Designed to support 100 young people per year, with a strong focus on women and persons with disabilities, Project Dineo provides structured training, mentorship, apprenticeships and work-integrated learning across high-demand trades.
Complementing this was the rollout of the Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) pilot, opening doors for experienced but unqualified technicians to gain formal certification.
To address urgent capability gaps, MIWA further supported the expansion of Short Skills training programmes in the Free State and Northern Cape. These blended-learning courses - covering both technical and non-technical disciplines - have already delivered measurable improvements in workshop performance, customer service, diagnostics and electrical competence. “These interventions are not simply training programmes; they are a direct investment into business sustainability, employability, and long-term industry growth,” notes Niemand.
Technical excellence and supplier partnerships - MIWA’s technical support footprint continued to grow this year through the popular SpannerTorque Roadshow, which travelled to major regions, connecting technicians with leading suppliers in a highly interactive learning environment. The programme’s hands-on format, combined with technical bulletins and supplier-led content, has strengthened confidence and capability within workshops nationwide.
MIWA also hosted a successful SpannerTorque Pavilion at Automechanika Johannesburg 2025, providing high-value exposure, quality leads, and unmatched networking opportunities for participating suppliers and members. The dedicated hospitality lounge was a standout feature, enabling relaxed engagement and strengthening relationships between stakeholders. “SpannerTorque has evolved into a true platform for education, collaboration and innovation. It brings suppliers and workshops together in a way that elevates the entire aftermarket,” says Niemand.
Strengthening the brand and building consumer trust - MIWA’s PR and communications strategy delivered outstanding results in 2025, with high social engagement, strong media presence, and increased broadcast activity, helping to solidify MIWA’s position as a trusted industry voice.
The association also expanded its consumer education efforts through workshops focused on empowering women, teaching practical vehicle care and helping communities feel more confident in managing their own mobility needs. “It is a privilege to see the impact these sessions have on women who want to be more independent and informed about their vehicles,” says Niemand.
An election year that sharpened focus - With the RMI’s AGM cycle falling within 2025, MIWA welcomed new leadership across its structures. The election year brought fresh energy and renewed focus on strategic priorities including transformation, youth development and strengthening member value.
During Women’s Month, MIWA proudly highlighted the trailblazing women within the association, showcasing their stories and contributions as part of the organisation’s ongoing commitment to transformation.
Driving business and industry collaboration - This year also saw increased engagement with fleet companies, insurance groups and key industry partners, helping MIWA members access new business avenues and strengthen customer relationships. “These engagements are essential. They allow us to advocate for independent workshops, understand evolving industry needs and ensure our members remain competitive,” says Niemand.
As MIWA closes off an exceptionally positive year, Niemand says the association’s achievements are a direct reflection of its members, partners, and committed regional teams. “Our focus remains on uplifting our industry, creating opportunities for young people, ensuring professionalism, and supporting the growth of independent workshops. 2025 has been a year of meaningful progress, and we are excited to build on this momentum in 2026,” he concludes.
