MIWA Spanner Torque sparks ongoing technical training collaboration in KZN
A recent engine expertise training initiative hosted by Goldwagen in collaboration with DRiV has highlighted the growing impact of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) Spanner Torque platform in creating meaningful industry partnerships that directly benefit independent workshops.
The technical training event, held on 12 May in Berea, KwaZulu-Natal, was a direct spin-off from the recent KZN MIWA Spanner Torque event. One of the connections continued beyond the event. What began as engagement and networking during Spanner Torque quickly evolved into a practical training opportunity focused on engine expertise, product knowledge and best practice application.
According to MIWA’s KZN regional representative Morne de Jager, the initiative perfectly demonstrates how MIWA events are creating real value for members beyond the event itself. “The KZN MIWA Spanner Torque event created the initial connection and engagement between members, suppliers and technical specialists,” he explained.
“Following the event, Goldwagen and DRiV continued the conversation and responded with practical technical training that directly addressed workshop needs. It is exactly the kind of collaboration we want to encourage within the independent aftermarket sector.”
The training brought together workshop owners, technicians, apprentices and supplier representatives, creating an environment focused on technical learning, skills development and industry collaboration.
DRiV provided technical expertise and support throughout the sessions, while Goldwagen facilitated the initiative and venue arrangements. “The key focus was helping workshops better understand products, proper application methods and best practice fitting procedures,” said De Jager. “This type of practical training strengthens the technical confidence of independent workshops, helps members save time and money, and supports doing the job correctly according to proper technical standards.”
The event also reinforced MIWA’s ongoing focus on skills development and youth engagement within the sector. Apprentices attended the sessions and discussions took place around future involvement in initiatives such as MotorMech and broader technical exposure opportunities for younger industry entrants.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with members praising the relevance and practical value of the information shared. “The interaction during the technical sessions stood out because the discussions related directly to everyday workshop challenges,” added De Jager. “Members appreciated the practical nature of the training and the opportunity to engage directly with suppliers and technical specialists.”
Importantly, the initiative is expected to be the start of broader collaboration between MIWA, suppliers and technical partners going forward.
“There is a clear intention to continue building on this momentum with more technical training, networking and supplier engagement opportunities in KZN and potentially other regions,” he says. “We are very optimistic about these sessions and the future rollout. Initiatives like this strengthen relationships across the industry and create genuine value for independent workshops and their teams.”
The success of the Berea training initiative underscores how MIWA’s Spanner Torque platform continues to evolve beyond networking alone - creating tangible opportunities for member development, supplier collaboration and practical technical upskilling across the independent aftermarket sector.
