Potholes were a major cause for carnage on roads over Easter
MISA, the Motor Industry Staff Association, demands that Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga must tell South African motorists how and when the pothole pandemic in South Africa will be properly addressed before more road users die after the carnage of 225 people dying over the Easter long weekend, in 185 fatal accidents.
Martlé Keyter, MISA’s Chief Executive Officer: Operations, says the shocking increase of 59 more deaths compared to the same period last year came a month after MISA pleaded with Government to find a solution to the pothole pandemic South Africa is faced with.
“The Minister listed reckless and negligent driving, as well as drunk driving being some of the contributing factors, but remained silent on the disturbing state of our roads. It is also not clear what progress, if any, was made with the Vala Zonke-project launched by the Former Minister of Transport Fikele Mabula on 8 August last year, to address potholes in all the provinces,” says Keyter.
Last month Keyter warned that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s budget of R142,9 billion to fund efforts to construct, upgrade and maintain the national and provincial road networks over the next 3 years, is adequate to include repairing the estimated 25 million potholes on our roads.
