Pump up your fuel and vehicle savings
Topping up your fuel tank can siphon off a sizeable part of your budget every month. In order to be aware of any blind spots in your vehicle accounts, it makes sense to shop around and save cash where you can, says Sarah Nicholson, Commercial Manager of the Justmoney personal finance website.
“It’s difficult to predict fuel prices given the volatile rand and political tensions in the Middle East, while the Minister of Finance could potentially announce increases in fuel taxes and levies when he delivers the 2020 National Budget this month (26 February),” says Nicholson. “What we do know is that the petrol price has nearly doubled in South Africa over the past decade. Given the high cost of owning and running a vehicle, it’s worthwhile finding out how to get as much value as possible.”
Justmoney offers 12 tips to drive savings:
Stick to the speed limit: You’ll use less fuel and be safer. Note potential road hazards and anticipate how other drivers will react. Drive smoothly in heavy traffic and avoid driving too fast and then braking at speed bumps.
Cut the aircon: The aircon’s compressor pump uses power from the engine and increases fuel use, especially at low speeds. Use a fan only, or keep windows closed when the aircon is on.
Buy wisely: Research the running costs for various car models. A more fuel-efficient vehicle will save money and the environment. If you need vehicle finance, let Justmoney help you.
Keep moving: Accelerating from a stationary position uses more energy than when you’re moving. Pace yourself in the traffic.
Look at loyalty schemes: Several retailers have teamed up with fuel providers ‒Pick n Pay (BP), Clicks (Shell) and Dischem (Total). These enable you to boost your shopper points as you fill up. Take care of tyres: Properly balanced, suitably inflated, high-quality tyres will last longer and give you a smoother ride.
Lose weight: A lighter car uses less fuel, so don’t drive around with unnecessary items in your boot or the back of the car. Remove roof racks when not in use.
Negotiate car insurance premiums: Shop around for the best offers. To find out more about different types of car insurance, and to get a free vehicle finance quote, click here.
Know your torque: Don’t rev your car excessively when you start it. Also drive it at the correct revolutions per minute (RPM) so the engine produces the most torque. Check your manual under “engine specifications” for your RPM.Maintain your car: Book regular vehicle services and check that the wheel alignment is on point. Use the appropriate engine oil.
Time is money: Try to drive during non-peak times – you’ll use less petrol and arrive in a better mood.
Cut your car use: Walk, cycle or use public transport, or join a car pool.
