Safer Fleets, Safer Roads: The dealership’s role
South Africa's logistics sector is booming, with freight transport expected to contribute an estimated R875 billion to the economy by 2025. Currently, road freight accounts for approximately 84% of the country’s freight transportation, and this projected growth will likely result in a surge of fleet vehicles in action - a positive development for dealerships operating in this market. Although the government has committed to upgrading the nation’s road infrastructure for improved safety, nearly 10% of accidents are attributed to poor vehicle maintenance, making it a significant cause of crashes.
“The number of fleet vehicles on the road that are not properly maintained is concerning,” says Sheraaz Patel, Executive Head at Motorvaps, a specialised dealership partner and provider of value-added products and services. “Since these vehicles often travel long distances with heavy loads, even minor maintenance issues can detract from the safety of drivers and other road users.”
As with any machinery, regular maintenance is essential to keep it in optimal working condition. This maintenance goes beyond ensuring functionality and becomes a critical safety measure. “No matter the size of the vehicle, basic maintenance is necessary,” elaborates Patel. “Worn or faulty brakes, damaged lights, old wiper blades, and balding tyres can all significantly contribute to road accidents. Regardless of how well-trained a driver is or how cautious their driving behaviour, a mechanically unsound vehicle cannot properly signal turns, handle adverse road conditions like rain or ice, or brake effectively to prevent collisions. Combined with some of our country’s road infrastructure issues, this lack of maintenance increases the risk of accidents.”
He also highlights that poor maintenance not only endangers public safety but can also expose fleet owners to liability if an unsafe vehicle causes a crash. “Ultimately, the vehicle owner is responsible for its maintenance to ensure safety. If a defective part contributes to a collision, they may face liability claims that could result in substantial financial damage. As a critical driver of South Africa’s economic growth, it is essential that the wheels keep turning for the freight and logistics sector,” stresses Patel. “Equally important, however, is ensuring safety on the country’s roads. Fleet vehicle dealerships can play a crucial role in achieving both objectives by providing customers with optional insurance and non-insurance add-ons such as maintenance plans, mechanical warranties, service plans, and tyre and rim protection.”
He adds that these products and services create a second gross income stream for fleet vehicle dealers which is crucial for mitigating against the decline in domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies, minibuses, medium, and heavy trucks. “However, with the motor industry contributing just under 5% to the country’s GDP, this helps foster a win-win situation that contributes to safer roads and a stronger economy.”
