Scania - the future is Super

 

Scania Southern Africa recently invited select media to join Managing Director, Erik Bergvall and Mark Erasmus, Sales & Marketing Director, for a discussion around the question of “What does efficiency really mean when every kilometer moved determines whether businesses gain or lose margin? Followed by a walkthrough of the Scania Assembly Plant in Aeroton, Johannesburg.

 

South Africa’s transport system is under increasing pressure, but the most important shifts are no longer happening at the pump – they are happening in how efficiency is defined, measured and used to drive commercial survival.

 

Scania Southern Africa is introducing the Scania Super powertrain, engineered to deliver industry- leading fuel efficiency, reduced operating costs and improved total transport economy. Built on a new engine platform with optimized combustion and reduced friction, Scania Super enables operators to move with less – translating every kilometer into measurable business value. The discussion session revolved around how innovations like the Scania Super are redefining efficiency in real terms, beyond fuel savings alone – Scania claims that in-house usage on the new Super, with its 520hp 13-litre power-plant, transmission and rear axle package, has delivered an 8% fuel efficiency improvement.

 

Bergvall commented that in the modern transport scenario, Fleet operators evaluate vehicles based on operating economics and lifecycle performance as opposed to just the upfront acquisition costs. The lifecycle cost savings can play an important role in the purchase decision when replacing fleets.

 

Erasmus said that over the lifecycle of a truck, fuel makes up between 40 and 55% of the total running costs and that an 8% improvement in efficiency compared to their previous offering. He stated, ‘Operators always test the vehicles prior to purchasing, but there has been good uptake on our order book. We expect the improvement in efficiency to be confirmed by local long-distance transporters operating the new Super on routes like the demanding Durban corridor.

 

The Scania assembly plant transitioned to the new Super platform in early April and was assembling the new Super range from initial chassis assembly through to finished vehicle at the time of our visit. Bergvall pointed out that due to the modular design of the assembly line and of the vehicles themselves, the line is capable of fitting different variants and models into the line easily and without disruption. Scania Southern Africa has its support network prepared for the new Super driveline range and will be exhibiting at NAMPRO.
