Daimler AG, the parent company of luxury car brand Mercedes Benz, has announced that together with partner Bosch, it will start testing self-driving taxis in the Silicon Valley area of California, USA in 2019. The companies made the joint announcement in July saying it was part of a test programme that will trial cars designed for city driving.
They were, however, not forthcoming on where exactly the Robo-Fleet trial will take place, but explained that it will involve a passenger shuttle service, using luxury vehicles. It intends starting off using the S-Class sedans and B-Class hatchbacks, while long term it will include vehicles such as the F 105 “Luxury In Motion” concept it revealed at CES just a few years ago.
The system will use a human driver, with their own steering wheel, to oversee the vehicle. Passengers will hail taxis via an app service operated by Daimler, and will travel free of charge on selected routes within the city during the pilot.
The service will be built atop the artificial intelligence platform Nvidia DRIVE Pegasus, supplied by chipmaker Nvidia, the companies told the media during their conference.
Bosch already has proven experience in building active safety systems as well as semi-autonomous systems already in use. The two companies say they will work together to develop the sensors the vehicles use to perceive the world, and the software that makes the actual driving decisions.
Bosch is already in the process of developing an electronic control unit – which will act as the main computer to controls functions within a self-driving vehicle. The latter will use Nvidia’s hardware chips and base software technology. Until then, it will rely on existing technology from Nvidia, like its Pegasus platform, said Michael Fausten, Bosch’s head of urban autonomous driving.
