SMEs champion the training of the next generation of mechanics
The Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) continues to drive skills development in the automotive sector by working closely with training institutions and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to ensure the next generation of mechanics receive the necessary training and industry exposure.
Following the RMI’s recent recognition of the College of Cape Town’s (COCT) contributions to motor mechanic training, accredited workshops are stepping up to support apprenticeships. By taking on apprentices, these businesses are not only investing in young talent but also strengthening the industry’s future.
“Apprenticeships play a critical role in bridging the skills gap in our sector,” says Louis van Huyssteen, National Director Training for RMI. “Employers who invest in training not only uplift young professionals but also contribute to a sustainable and highly skilled workforce.”
The College of Cape Town provides students with a solid theoretical foundation, but practical exposure in real workshop environments is essential for preparing them for trade tests and future careers. Rasheed Adhikari, Facilitator at COCT, emphasises the importance of employer involvement: “Our students benefit greatly from hands-on experience, and partnerships with SMEs ensure they develop the technical skills and confidence needed to succeed in the workplace.”
Workshops that participate in apprenticeship programmes often see significant benefits, including access to motivated young professionals who bring fresh energy and new perspectives to the workplace. Many SMEs have already successfully upskilled young technicians with no prior mechanical experience, demonstrating that investment in talent development yields long-term rewards for both businesses and the industry.
By fostering strong partnerships between businesses, training institutions, and industry bodies like the RMI, the future of the automotive sector remains in good hands.
