Tata Motors launches the Ultra range of new-generation, smart trucks in SA
Tata Motors and its authorised distributor, Tata Africa Holdings Limited, launched their commercial range of locally assembled – at their Rosslyn assembly plant - Ultra FE+ multipurpose heavy-duty trucks in South Africa. The Ultra T.9 and Ultra T.14, are the first in an ‘Ultrathon’ range purpose designed for African conditions. With a focus on the rising need for safer, smarter and greener cargo mobility, the Ultra range is perfectly suited for a wide variety of conventional and specialist logistics applications.
The Ultra range claims best-in-class power & torque and fuel efficiency with lower total cost of ownership (TCO). This new range is driven by Tata Motors’ globally proven Euro IV spec turbocharged diesel engines, engineered to run fuel efficiently on Euro II grade fuel. The Ultra T.9 is powered with a 3.3 litre diesel engine, generating 114kW @ 2 600 rpm and 450Nm from 1 500 rpm. The Ultra T.9 has a GVM of 8 990kgs.
The Ultra T.14 uses a 5.0L engine, with 132 kW @ 2 400 rpm and 590Nm from 1 000 rpm. The Ultra T.14 has a GVM of 14 700Kgs. Both engines are coupled to six speed gearboxes with booster assisted clutch. The trucks come equipped with parabolic suspension for rugged and uninterrupted operations. The trucks are offered with Tata Motors’ flagship connected vehicle system, the Fleet Edge, for efficient fleet management that helps further increase fleet productivity.
The robustly built Ultra range feature a walk-through cabin, power steering, dashboard-mounted gear lever, 180 windshield vision and mechanically suspended seat for safe, ergonomic and fatigue-free driving.

In terms of going forward Mehrotra said, “Tata Motors are continuing with their development programmes towards a greener future and already supply CNG conversions for customer requirements, as well as having displayed their EV truck at the Delhi Show recently, we might consider EV trucks aimed at ‘last mile’ delivery in South Africa dependent on infra-structure availability. We are investigating and testing all of our options from ICE through Hydrogen to EV’s. Some of our suppliers have stopped producing components for Euro II engines, hence the re-engineering of our engines to suit conditions and fuel availability with in some countries.
