The growing Automotive Aftermarket provides huge business opportunity in the Motor Industry - be at Automechanika Johannesburg and Futuroad Expo, 5-7 September 2023, Expo Centre, Nasrec, Johannesburg!
The automotive aftermarket continues to grow and offer opportunity for businesses serving this dynamic industry sector and there is no doubt that the correlation between new vehicle sales and the size and age of the vehicle parc presents huge business opportunity.
According to the 2023 Automotive Industry Export Manual, authored by Dr. Norman Lamprecht, Executive Manager at the Automotive Industry Business Council /naamsa, the size of the South African vehicle parc was 13, 3 million vehicles at the end of 2022 of which 7, 87 million, or 59, 2%, comprised passenger cars. The average age of the total vehicle parc in 2022 increased to 10 years and six months.
The increases in the vehicle parc and its average age is a very positive trend for the automotive aftermarket as it is a sure indicator of the feasibility and sustainability of the industry sector going forward. The development of EV technology in the motor industry opens new opportunities for the sector that will not escape the attention of progressive business planners.
The automotive aftermarket is of lifeblood importance to the truck sector and one need only to consider what Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association, has to say in this respect: “Sustained high levels of professional maintenance support and repair services is of vital importance to the road freight industry. This requires not only professional and skilled service providers and employees, but also high quality parts, lubricants, solvents and processes. Maintenance is a large part of the operational expenses in any road freight company and operators (transport companies) need to ensure they stay abreast of developments, technological changes, innovations and new product and service offerings. Anyone involved in road freight should always avail themselves of Expos or events where new technology and development is showcased. The Road Freight Association (RFA) recommends that road freight companies should, where possible, avail themselves of the opportunity to visit Automechanika Johannesburg and Futuroad, as the events offer a unique opportunity for commercial vehicle owners to view the latest products and services available to them first hand and engage with experts in their respective fields at the various conferences and discussion opportunities available to them at the two Shows. Road freight operators are welcome to contact the RFA for information on these and other events relating to the road freight sector. In addition, the increasing age of the vehicle parc underscores the necessity to remain abreast of the availability of parts, service and support services to enable fleets to remain operationally in optimal condition and minimise downtime,” he concludes.
The infrastructure to cope with an increase in the number and average age of the vehicle parc is essential. Jakkie Olivier, CEO of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), says the RMI is aware of the fact that the average age of the South African car park is increasing. When asked how the RMI viewed this trend and the automotive aftermarket in general, Olivier said: “the members of our eight Constituent Associations who serve the growing automotive aftermarket are continuously engaged in providing quality products and services to ensure that the needs of vehicle owners are provided for, an essential service to the continued well-being of the South African motor industry.
The automotive sector is in the midst of unprecedented change, marked by the continued advancement of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) and lower fuel emissions, a convergence of industries, transforming supply chains, and rapidly changing customer preferences geared towards more sustainable options. We are living in changing and dynamic times with artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and automation being applied to create ingenious innovations and speed up the evolution of industries. The retail motor environment is no exception. We must keep abreast of this fast-moving transformation, especially around customer care and after-sales service issues.
A priority of the RMI will be to ensure we ready our members for these changes through awareness, education, and skills development. Our objectives and actions this year will undoubtedly influence not only the automotive industry but generations to come. A new-look automotive industry is no longer a dream. It is happening and it is happening at a rapid rate. How our members and business owners think about their future in the industry, how they prepare for the change and most importantly, how they meet the ever-increasing demands of consumers will largely be influenced by their everyday actions and aspirations,” he concludes.
