Tragic N3 Bus Accident underscores the importance of holiday road safety
A devastating multi-vehicle accident occurred on the N3 Northbound near Market Road in Pietermaritzburg last night, leaving two confirmed fatalities and at least two dozen passengers injured. The accident involved a passenger bus and two trucks, with the bus catching fire shortly after the collision. This incident highlights the critical importance of road safety during the festive season, a period marked by increased traffic and heightened risks on the roads.
Vishal Premlall, National Director of the Tyre, Equipment, Parts Association (TEPA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), said, “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this horrific accident. As we approach the holiday season, it is imperative that every motorist takes responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others on the road.”
Premlall emphasised the importance of vehicle preparedness and adhering to safe driving practices. “Ensuring your car is roadworthy and taking simple precautions such as maintaining a safe following distance, avoiding distractions, and adhering to speed limits can significantly reduce the risk of accidents,” he added.
TEPA urges holidaymakers to conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections and adopt the following 10 golden rules for highway safety:
1. Plan your route, take breaks, and respect speed limits.
2. Drive responsibly to avoid unnecessary delays for others.
3. Ensure your vehicle is in peak condition before departure.
4. Stay calm and patient in stressful traffic conditions.
5. Use navigation tools and traffic reports to stay informed.
6. Focus on driving; avoid cellphone use.
7. Maintain a safe following distance.
8. Adapt your driving to road conditions.
9. Ensure seatbelts are worn by all passengers, including toddlers in car seats.
10. Review your insurance coverage to avoid surprises.
“Every journey starts with a safe and roadworthy vehicle, but it is also up to every driver to act responsibly and with consideration for others. Let’s work together to make this festive season safer for all,” Premlall concluded.
