Turbo Direct SA takes over the exclusive sponsorship of the Time Attack ZA Challenge
Now titled the Turbo Direct Time Attack ZA Challenge (Formally known as Michelin Cup Challenge) The event was started in 2012 by true enthusiasts to create an affordable racing experience for the average Joe, allowing drivers a chance to show off their extraordinary talents and to hone their skills. The Challenge is a year-long series organised by the Renault Sport Club of South Africa, the Audi Club of South Africa and the Subaru Club South Africa running under title sponsorship of Turbo Direct SA Time Attack ZA Challenge.
The rush from the sport is the same elemental rush that has driven world-renowned race-track stars. However, because it’s usually done illegally, i.e. street racing on public roads, there have been no provisions to ensure the safety of both drivers and spectators. The Turbo Direct SA Time Attack ZA Challenge makes it legal and safe for all involved
The Time Attack ZA will consist five main events, one being held every second month. Each event is scored based on fastest times with a final prize giving at the end of the year. The Challenge is divided into different classes, at the dyno event, which uses power, torque and weight to generate specific classes to make it fair. The 2020 calendar will kick off with the Turbo Direct Dyno Day on the 29TH Feb, followed by the VKC Time Attack on April 25, the Zwartkops Track Day June 21, Redstar track day 29 August, Formula K Head to Head on the 3rdof Oct and the prize giving in Nov.
“If you are an avid track guy or girl looking for something more than the usual track day then you are at the right place! 5 Events, over 10 Months, 1 Winner per class is what it’s all about,” said Chris Kambouris founder/owner and Managing Director of Turbo Direct SA. It’s based on the famous Time Attack series all around the world the only thing that matters is setting the fastest times. No head to head racing, simply beating the clock at your own pace. This makes it suitable for all skill sets, shapes, makes and sizes.
We race them all, track, head to heads and even dyno the cars. Friendly people with advice and help is all around, so don’t be afraid, whether you have raced for years or never hit the peak boost this series does not disappoint anyone. It’s a unique, high-speed way of combating street racing in SA, creating a safer and accessible car racing experience for all drivers and spectators,” said Kambouris.
It’s driven by adrenaline from both drivers and spectators. For drivers, the speed is the ultimate thrill, along with the skills and expertise required to beat record times. For spectators, communing around drivers and events, adds to the thrill of speed, sound and competition. Knowing the passion and direct involvement Chris Kambouris brings to events like this, there is a lot more in store for the competitors in the form of one off cash prizes, exciting giveaways like Simpson race suits, Gloves, shoes, Turbochargers, and a vast range of products that TurboDirect S.A import and manufacture.
The previous Michelin Cup Challenge started with 10 cars, and last year had over 140 cars taking part in the year-long tournament, with legs happening in various locations over the year. At the different locations, drivers race the strips, and the tracks using their own regular cars. By its very existence, this fixture has addressed a significant amount of traffic law infringements. These include offences such as the illegal racing, obviously; speeding, failing to display number plates and registration, use of non-road suitable vehicles, expired or non-existent registrations and the general safety of all involved and all road users.
