Turbocharging has downsized the best engines of today
Manufacturers are getting better or equal performance from smaller turbo charged engines. Recently for the first time in 23 years there is was no V8 engine on the list of Ward’s Auto’s 10 best engines. “Due to the progress of turbocharging technology, many 6 cylinder engines create enough horsepower and torque to substitute the 8 cylinder engines,” said Chris Kambouris.MD of Turbo Direct.
V8 engines and car models have slowly decreased in the past years. the same trend can be seen from the 6 to 4 cylinder engines, and 4 cylinder engines are also dominating the market as well as Ward’s list of best engines. In fact, besides from 2 hybrid engines on the list, all other 8 best awarded engines are turbocharged, including 1 hybrid.
Mitsubishi Turbochargers and Engine Europe B.V. expect this trend to only continue further in the coming future, where more hybrid engines also will become turbocharged. “The Turbo Charger industry is on a roll and its one of the few industries seeing massive growth almost all the manufacturers are fitting turbo’s today to both there diesel and petrol powered models, with many of them downsizing there engines to 6, 4 and even 3 and 2 cylinders all fitted with turbos.”
“One can hardly feel the difference driving the new 3 and 2 cylinder powered cars fitted with turbos the performance and power is all there with the added value of now of saving fuel and the overall cost of the car or vehicle,” said turbo guru Chris Kambouris.
